The Public Treasure, The Arch, Putney, May 2018.
The installation: The Public Treasure was inspired by the aspirations of the revolutionary Putney debates of 1647 for a more equitable future, and sited at the same location, St Mary's, Putney. It consisted of two strands:
Searching .. from extensive wanderings in the locality: 4 silk banners, digitally printed with marked up local imagery and Levellers' texts from the 1640s; and a B/W video.
Reclaiming ... 12 large fabric banners with text, posters and symbol stickers, as calls to action prompted by the Levellers and Diggers, and other writers such as Hannah Arendt, Guy Standing, George Monbiot. Also 5 ceramic tiles with found patterns of local council estates gilded in gold leaf, informed by John Boughton's social and political history of social housing: Municipal Dreams, these tiles are a shrine to the aspirations of decent homes for all.
